Opticon SE-420 — 4.2″ Reprogrammable E-Paper Labels for Bins, Pick Faces and Kanban
A printed bin label fixes a location to one part number until someone reprints it. Slotting changes, seasonal reslots and kanban rebalancing all stall on that. The SE-420 makes the label itself reprogrammable: a 4.2-inch e-paper display at 400 x 300 pixels that takes new content over the air in seconds, at a size that fits standard bin rails and small-parts shelving.
Sized and priced for density
The 4.2″ format is the one you deploy in volume. At 104.9 x 93.9 mm and 92 grams it fits bin fronts, small-parts shelving, tote faces and carton flow lanes where the larger 5.83″ label overhangs. One base station carries up to 1,000 displays — a meaningful advantage when you’re labelling every pick face in a zone rather than every aisle.
A locator LED on every location
The high-efficiency RGB LED runs in seven colors with adjustable brightness and duty cycle, giving you much of the value of a pick-to-light installation without the wiring, containment or commissioning. Light the target bin for a picker, color-code a zone for a wave, flag every location holding a quarantined lot, or drive a digital kanban signal when a bin crosses its reorder point. Because the LED is individually addressable, the same hardware serves picking, replenishment, cycle counting and quality holds.
Barcodes and part data on the label itself
The high-contrast display renders both 1D and 2D barcodes at scannable quality, so location codes, part numbers and routing data live on the label and change with the slot. Optional NFC adds a tap-to-read path where a line-of-sight scan is awkward — deep shelving, floor-level totes, or operators in gloves. Templates are fully customisable, so the label matches your existing label stock and floor process rather than forcing a retrain.
Color that carries status
The SE-420R displays black, white and red; the SE-420RY adds yellow. In a warehouse that second highlight color is usually worth having: red for a hold or a stockout, yellow for a short pick or a location under count, black for normal flow. A supervisor reads the state of a zone walking it, rather than from a terminal.
Fails safe
E-paper is bistable — the image persists with no power applied at all. A flat cell or a base station outage leaves the last correct location data on the label rather than a blank face, which matters when an operator is mid-wave. On four CR2450 lithium primaries the SE-420 runs approximately five years at room temperature at five updates per day. Operating range is 0 to 40 °C at 40–60% non-condensing humidity; storage tolerance runs −20 to 60 °C.
