Description
Opticon SE-290A โ Wireless Pick-to-Light with a Programmable Button
Conventional pick-to-light means cabling every pick face, commissioning the run, and rewiring whenever the slotting changes. The SE-290A delivers the same operator experience without any of it: a 2.9-inch e-paper label with an RGB locator LED and a physical button, running on batteries over a wireless link.
The button closes the loop
Most electronic labels only talk outward. The SE-290A takes input. The operator presses to confirm the pick, and the event goes straight to your back-end โ no handheld, no second scan, no walking back to a terminal. The free SDK exposes short press, long press and double press as separate actions, so one button can confirm a pick, flag a short, and trigger a replenishment request depending on how it’s held.
Beyond events, the SDK lets you change the displayed page and control the LED directly from your own logic. That means the label isn’t locked to a single vendor workflow โ it becomes a small programmable endpoint you can shape around how your floor actually runs.
Light the face, confirm the pick, move on
The high-efficiency RGB LED with adjustable brightness and duty cycle marks the target location. The picker sees the light, takes the item, presses the button, and the light clears. That loop is the entire value of a pick-to-light installation, and here it arrives as a clip-on label rather than a capital project. Reslot a zone and the labels move with it โ nothing to re-cable, nothing to re-commission.
Density where it matters
At 103.5 x 43.2 mm and 41.7 grams, the SE-290A is the smallest and lightest display in the SE-Range, sized for pick faces, bin fronts, carton flow lanes and small-parts shelving rather than aisle signage. One base station supports 1,500 displays โ the highest capacity in the range โ across a typical 25-metre indoor span. When you’re labelling every face in a zone rather than every aisle, that headroom is the difference between one base station and two.
Two models, and the temperature difference matters
| SE-290A | SE-290ARY | |
|---|---|---|
| Display colors | Black, white | Black, white, red, yellow |
| Operating temperature | โ15 to 65 ยฐC | 0 to 40 ยฐC |
| Best for | Chilled rooms, unheated warehousing, hot production areas | Ambient zones where color-coded status is worth more than range |
This is a genuine trade-off, not a marketing tier. The monochrome SE-290A tolerates a far wider temperature band; the four-color SE-290ARY gives you red and yellow for status coding but only inside a standard ambient range. Pick based on your environment first and your color needs second. Note that the RGB locator LED works identically on both โ the color difference is the e-paper display only, so the SE-290A can still signal status by light even without red on screen.
Fails safe, runs for years
E-paper is bistable, so the image persists with no power at all โ a flat cell or base station outage leaves the last correct location data on the face rather than a blank label mid-wave. Two CR2450 lithium primaries deliver approximately five years at room temperature at five updates per day with no LED use. Heavy LED and button activity in an active picking zone will draw that down, so plan the replacement cycle around your actual pick volume rather than the headline figure.
